We are so often asked, “can I continue with Reformer Pilates during pregnancy”, whilst every pregnancy is unique, most often the answer is YES! Not only can you carry on, but Reformer Pilates can help you maintain strength, flexibility, and overall health and mental wellbeing during pregnancy. However, there are a few things to consider:
Find a qualified instructor
Work with a prenatal Pilates expert who can provide guidance and make adjustments as needed. At MK Reformed we have many instructors who are specially trained in Pre and Post natal exercise so they can give you all the extra support you need.
Make adjustments
Make sure your MK Reformed Instructor is aware of your pregnancy and how you are feeling, they will suggest modifications to exercises to accommodate your changing body. For example, you can use a heavier spring for stability exercises, or go lighter for leg or arm work. You can also try seated arm work with the straps, standing work, or side-lying exercises.
Consider the trimester and listen to your body
Be aware of how you’re feeling and don’t push yourself too hard. If you feel tired or nauseous, you can reduce your pace and your MK Reformed instructor will check in with you throughout the class and help suggest modifications.
Take advantage of the reformer
The elevated surface of the reformer can be helpful if you find it difficult to lie down on a mat. The spring tension can also support your body against gravity.
Whether it’s your first pregnancy or not, each journey through pregnancy is totally unique so make sure to get in touch with us to talk through any concerns you may have before your class. Stay tuned to hear about exclusive prenatal classes running at selected MK Reformed studios.
